Proposition 8, the 2008 California ban on gay marriages, was overturned today. In Judge Walker’s decision, he said
Because California has no interest in discriminating against gay men and lesbians and because Prop. 8 prevents California from fulfilling its constitutional obligation to provide marriages on an equal basis, the court concludes the Prop. 8 is unconstitutional.
Today is a good day for all of us who are advocates of equality. While this is not the end of this controversial issue, as an appeal to the higher court would surely be made, this is the start of something good.
I have always been supportive of equal rights and just like I had been happy with the rulings of the Supreme Court on Ang Ladlad’s case last April, I am also happy with how the ruling on Prop 8 in California turned out. This only goes to show that people are becoming more and more aware of the inequality experienced by the gay community.
Like every controversial case, this issue still has a long road to travel on but good decisions such as the one we had today fills everyone’s heart with hope that at the end of the road, everything will turn out good.
Equality
Everyone deserves to be treated like everyone else. Gender, sexual preference and social status shouldn’t be the basis for how one should be treated and looked upon by the society. Prop 8 denies that equality to the gay community. The ruling today, brings equality a step closer them.
So yes, the world should celebrate with the rest of the gay community today because today, we start leveling the playing field for everybody.
*On that note, let me put in a wistful sigh and whisper:
I hope my Pilipinas has more people with open minds as those people who are against Prop 8 in California.
