A book on life, dying and everything in between.
Have a Little Faith is a book written by Mitch Albom, the author of some of the bestsellers like Tuesdays with Morrie and The Five People You Meet in Heaven.
Have a Little Faith is story of 2 different people, 2 different religions and 2 entirely different communities. Amidst the differences, their stories have one solid thing in common: Faith.
A Rabbi, Albert Lewis asked Mitch if he can write his Eulogy. A perplexing request but Mitch did the best he could to make a good, if not great, eulogy for Albert. What he thought would only be a 2 weeks worth of visiting with the Reb turned out to be an eight-year journey. In those eight years,Mitch came to know his Rabbi more than he could imagine he would ever know him.
Henry Covington, just like Albert Lewis is a Man of God but unlike those we are familiar with. Before he became a pastor, Henry was a drug dealer and an addict. His story gives hope to each of us. If he can change, so can we.
This book is not about religion but about what every religion tells us to have. At the end of it all, no matter how we worship or what we believe in, we only have one God, thus, only one faith.
Quotes from the book that I like:
- Faith is about doing. You are how you act. Not just how you believe.
- If we tend to the things that are important in life, if we are right with those we love and behave in line with our faith, our lives will not be cursed with the aching throb of unfulfilled business… We will never wallow in the agony of ‘I could have, I shouldn’t have’ … and when it’s time, our good-byes will be complete.
- Much of what we call “depression” is actually dissatisfaction. A result of setting a bar impossibly high or expecting treasures that we weren’t willing to work for.
- How can you ask if I love you? look at all I’ve done for you. What else would you call it?… That kind of love – the kind you realize you already have by the life you’ve created together – that’s the kind that lasts.
- If you don’t commit… you miss what’s on the other side… a happiness you cannot find alone.
- Nothing haunts like the things we don’t say.
- …When the world quiets down to the sound of your own breathing, we all want the same things: comfort, love, and a peaceful heart.
- You can’t fit the Lord in a box. But you can gather stories, tradition, wisdom and in time you needn’t lower the shelf; God is already nearer to thee.
- In the beginning there was a question. In the end, the question gets answered. God sings, we hum along, and there are many melodies but it’s all one song – one same, wonderful, human song.
